Nia gets the donated stem cells from her father.
The donated stem cells are put into your blood through a central line.
This is just like a blood transfusion (infusion).
- It is not a surgery.
- You will be awake.
- It can take a few minutes or up to 2 hours. The time depends on the number of cells.
Your treatment team will stay close to watch if your body has a bad response.
Some people can have a bad response to the infusion.
This is not common. Your doctor knows how to treat a bad response.
They will watch to see if you are:
- Coughing.
- Having trouble breathing.
- Feeling itchy.
- Getting low blood pressure.
The bad response can be caused by:
- The cells reacting.
- The preservative (chemicals) used to store the donated stem cells.
