Nia’s doctor explains the treatment, benefits, and risks. After asking questions, Nia and her parents sign forms to say they understand and want to do gene therapy.
Before treatment, there will be consent documents to read and sign.
You will discuss different options with your doctor and family, and they will ask for your permission before proceeding with the treatment.
- If you are under 18, your parent or other caregiver will sign the documents.
- If you are over 18, you will sign the documents yourself.
You can choose to let your parents or someone else you trust make the medical decisions for you, if you like.
Gene therapy is new.
This treatment may be part of a clinical trial.
Doctors are still learning about the risks.
